A Greenshot alternative.
Greenshot is free, open source and shipping releases again after years of silence. If it covers your day, stay. If you need scrolling capture, video, a more polished screenshot or live drawing on screen, here is which alternative covers what.
Hold Shift for a straight line, Ctrl for a rectangle and Ctrl + Shift for an arrow.
What is the best Greenshot alternative?
It depends on what Greenshot is missing for you. If you want more features for free, such as scrolling capture, GIFs, OCR and step numbers, the alternative is ShareX, which is also free and open source. If you want a more polished screenshot and live drawing on screen, the alternative is Sincron Screen Tools, with background, padding and shadow in its Screenshot Studio and on-screen text translated in place.
Greenshot is still a good choice: free on Windows, lightweight, with blur, pixelate and direct output to email and Office. It went from 2017 to 2025 without a stable release, then started shipping again. The latest release is 1.3.315, from March 2026, and the site already publishes 1.4 test builds.
There is no need to switch for its own sake. If Greenshot does what you need, it remains one of the best free tools on Windows.

Where Greenshot stands in 2026
The Windows version is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. There is also a Mac version on the App Store for US$1.99, which the official site says covers the project's own costs.
After version 1.2.10 in August 2017, the project went almost eight years without a stable release. The 1.3 releases started in 2025, 1.3.315 shipped on March 20, 2026, and the site now publishes 1.4 test builds. If you dropped Greenshot because it looked abandoned, it is worth another look.
What has not changed: the site describes full-page capture as an Internet Explorer feature, and Greenshot does not record video.

Who should switch and who should stay
Switch if you want presentation-ready screenshots
Sincron's Studio adds a gradient background, padding, rounded corners and a shadow, ready for docs, slides or a post.
Switch if you explain things live
With Ctrl + Shift + D, Sincron draws over any app during a call or class, without taking a screenshot first.
Switch if you need scrolling, GIFs and OCR
ShareX does all of that for free, in the same open-source spirit as Greenshot.
Stay if well-made basics are enough
Arrows, text, highlights, crop and sending to Office in a light tool: that is what Greenshot does well.
Stay if you blur data
Sincron has no blur or pixelate. If you hide data every day, Greenshot serves you better.
Stay if you also use a Mac
Greenshot has a Mac version for US$1.99. Sincron is Windows only.

What Greenshot does that Sincron doesn't
Blur and pixelate
Sincron does not hide data with blur. Leave the sensitive area outside the crop, or use Greenshot.
Cropping after capture
In Sincron you crop while selecting. There is no crop inside the Studio after capturing.
Email, Office and printer
Sincron copies the image or saves a PNG. It does not send straight to Outlook, Word, a printer or photo sites.
Mac
Sincron runs only on Windows 10 and 11. Greenshot has a Mac version.
