A ShareX alternative.
ShareX is free, open source and does almost everything. If you only want to mark where to click and paste it into chat, that many options can get in the way. Here is when a simpler tool makes sense and when you should stay.
Hold Shift for a straight line, Ctrl for a rectangle and Ctrl + Shift for an arrow.
What is the best ShareX alternative?
First, credit where it is due: ShareX is free, open source, ad-free and the most complete screenshot tool on Windows. If you use scrolling capture, GIFs, OCR, blur or automatic uploads to a server, you probably don't need an alternative.
If ShareX feels like more than you need, the simpler alternative is Sincron Screen Tools: four shortcuts and no tasks to configure. It draws arrows, rectangles and text over any app, frames the screenshot with a background and shadow, and translates on-screen text in place, keeping the original color and position.
Capturing and annotating with Sincron are free with no limits. For something even more basic, the Snipping Tool already comes with Windows. For a light middle ground with blur, there is Greenshot.

What makes ShareX powerful, and what it costs you
ShareX treats every capture as the start of a workflow: after you capture, it can open the editor, copy, save, read the text, upload to a server and copy the link, in whatever order you set. That is what makes it so good for people who automate.
If you only want to mark where to click and paste it into chat, that freedom turns into too many choices: capture menus, task menus, upload menus and tool menus. ShareX is built for people who want control over every step.
Sincron Screen Tools starts from the other end. It has four fixed shortcuts, for capture, draw, translate and summarize, with no task queue and no uploads. What it adds is reading the screen in your language: the translation appears over the original text, in images, PDFs, internal tools or games.
Who should switch and who should stay
Switch if you mark up and paste
Arrows, highlights, text and a clean background, pasted into Teams, Slack or WhatsApp. In Sincron that is Ctrl + Shift + D to mark up and Ctrl + Shift + C to frame.
Switch if you explain things live
Sincron draws over any app during a call or class, and the drawings show up in screen sharing.
Switch if you read screens in other languages
An error in Japanese, docs in Chinese, a tool in English: Sincron translates in place with your own OpenAI or OpenRouter key.
Stay if you record GIFs or video
ShareX records the screen and makes GIFs. Sincron does not record.
Stay if you automate uploads
Uploading to S3, shortened links and chained tasks are where ShareX shines. Sincron uploads nothing.
Stay if you need blur and steps
Blur, pixelate, step numbers and speech balloons are in ShareX and not in Sincron.

What ShareX does that Sincron doesn't
Scrolling, video and GIF
Sincron captures only what is visible and does not record the screen.
Blur, steps and callouts
There is no blur, pixelate, step numbers or speech balloons. To keep data out of a screenshot, leave it outside the crop.
OCR, uploads and history
Sincron does not copy the original text from an image, does not upload screenshots and keeps no history.
Pinning and extra tools
Pin to screen, color picker, ruler, background remover and video converter are ShareX features. Sincron has none of them.
Common questions about ShareX alternatives
Is ShareX really free?
Yes. ShareX is free, open source (GPL-3.0 license), ad-free and needs no account. It is also available on the Microsoft Store and Steam.
Does ShareX work on Mac?
No, ShareX is Windows only. On a Mac, the usual picks are CleanShot X and Shottr. For the same tool on Windows, Mac and Linux, there is Flameshot.
Can Sincron replace ShareX?
For annotated screenshots, drawing on screen and translation, yes. For GIFs, video, scrolling capture, OCR, blur and automatic uploads, no: ShareX remains the better choice there.
Can I use ShareX and Sincron together?
Yes. Sincron's shortcuts are Ctrl + Shift + C, D, T and S, and you can change any of them in Settings if one clashes with your ShareX hotkeys.
Which screenshot tool is simpler than ShareX?
The Snipping Tool, which ships with Windows, is the simplest. Sincron Screen Tools sits just above it: four shortcuts, live drawing and a framed background, with nothing to configure.
