A Snipping Tool alternative.
The Windows Snipping Tool has improved a lot: it records video, draws shapes and copies text from an image. For many people it is enough. Here is what it still can't do, and when it is worth adding another screenshot tool next to it.
Hold Shift for a straight line, Ctrl for a rectangle and Ctrl + Shift for an arrow.
What is the best Snipping Tool alternative?
For many people, the Snipping Tool itself is enough. On Windows 11 it captures with Win + Shift + S, records video with audio, draws rectangles, ovals, lines and arrows, redacts emails and phone numbers, and copies text from an image. If that is what you do, you don't need to install anything.
Switch when you need what it lacks. To type text on a screenshot, draw live over any app during a call, and deliver the screenshot with a background, padding and shadow, the alternative is Sincron Screen Tools, free with no limits for capturing and annotating. It also translates on-screen text in place.
For scrolling capture, blur and step numbers, the free alternative is ShareX, which is open source.

When it is enough and when to switch
Enough: crop and paste
Win + Shift + S, drag, Ctrl + V. For that, nothing beats what already ships with Windows.
Enough: copy text from an image
Text Actions copy the text in a screenshot, processed on your computer. Sincron does not do OCR.
Enough: record a short video
Video snips record the screen with audio. Sincron does not record.
Switch: typing on the screenshot
The Snipping Tool has no typed text box. In Sincron, the T key types straight on screen, over any app.
Switch: pointing live
In a call or class, Ctrl + Shift + D draws over any app, which keeps working underneath.
Switch: presentation-ready screenshots
Sincron's Studio adds background, padding, corners and shadow, ready for docs, slides or a ticket.
Switch: screens in another language
Sincron translates on-screen text in place, using your own OpenAI or OpenRouter key.

What the Snipping Tool does that Sincron doesn't
Video
The Snipping Tool records the screen with audio. Sincron records neither video nor GIFs.
Copying text from an image
Text Actions run OCR on your PC. Sincron does not copy the original text; it copies the translation.
Delay timer and window mode
The Snipping Tool can delay a capture by 1 to 5 seconds and has a window mode. Sincron captures a region or the full screen, with no delay.
Redacting emails and phone numbers
Quick redact hides detected emails and phone numbers. Sincron does not redact; leave the data outside the crop.
Common questions about the Snipping Tool
Can the Snipping Tool add arrows?
Yes. On Windows 11, the Shapes button adds rectangles, ovals, lines and arrows to a screenshot. To draw an arrow live, without capturing first, Sincron does it with Ctrl + Shift + D.
Can I type text in the Snipping Tool?
No. It has a pen and a highlighter for handwriting. To type on a screenshot, open it in Paint or use Sincron, which types on screen with the T key.
Can the Snipping Tool record the screen?
Yes. Video snips record a region of the screen with audio, and you can detach the audio afterwards. For GIFs, use ShareX.
Where does the Snipping Tool save screenshots?
According to Microsoft's help, it saves every screenshot automatically to the Screenshots folder. Win + Shift + S also leaves the image on the clipboard, ready to paste.
Can I use Sincron alongside the Snipping Tool?
Yes. Sincron uses Ctrl + Shift + C and Ctrl + Shift + D, and Win + Shift + S still opens the Snipping Tool. Use each one for what it does best.
