Is there a one-time-purchase Epic Pen alternative?

Yes. Epic Pen itself has a free version with a pen, highlighter, fading ink, a highlighted cursor, shapes, text, a whiteboard and blackboard, and a screenshot tool. Pro, which adds more colors and license management, is listed on the official site at €24 a year, with a monthly option and a 14-day free trial. The current page does not offer a one-time purchase.

To draw without paying anything, Microsoft's ZoomIt is free and zooms as well. In Sincron Screen Tools, drawing over any app is free and unlimited: Ctrl + Shift + D opens a pen, highlighter, text, shapes and a whiteboard or blackboard on every monitor.

If you would rather pay once, Sincron has an $89 lifetime plan for 2 computers that adds unlimited translation and summaries and custom image backgrounds in the Screenshot Studio. If you only draw, the free plan is enough.

Step by step

How to switch from Epic Pen to Sincron

It takes a few minutes and no credit card.

  1. Install it and open the layer

Download Sincron Screen Tools, confirm your email with the code sent to your inbox and press Ctrl + Shift + D. The drawing toolbar appears and you can drag it anywhere.

  2. Redo your usual moves

The pen is active from the start. Shift + a color key turns it into a highlighter, T adds text, Ctrl + Z undoes and E clears everything. For shapes, hold Shift (line), Ctrl (rectangle), Ctrl + Shift (arrow) or Tab (ellipse).

  3. Use a board when you need space

W opens a whiteboard and K a blackboard over everything. Press the same key again to close the board and get your screen back.

  4. Capture and send

The toolbar's capture button grabs a region or the full screen with your drawings. In the Screenshot Studio, set the background, padding, corners and shadow, then copy the image or save a PNG.

Real limits

What Epic Pen has and Sincron does not

Fading ink and a highlighted cursor

If you rely on these two Epic Pen features, note that Sincron has neither.

A Mac version

Epic Pen runs on Windows and Mac. Sincron runs only on Windows 10 and 11.

Zoom and recording

Sincron does not zoom or record the screen, and Epic Pen's site does not mention either feature. ZoomIt is free and does both.

Translation needs your own key

In Sincron, translating and summarizing require your own OpenAI or OpenRouter API key, with credit in your account at that provider, which bills you directly for usage. The free plan includes 5 translations a day. Drawing needs no key at all.

Common questions about Epic Pen alternatives

Is Epic Pen free?

It has a free version with a pen, highlighter, fading ink, a highlighted cursor, shapes, text, a whiteboard and blackboard, a screenshot tool and 16 colors. Pro is paid and adds 24 colors and license management.

How much does Epic Pen Pro cost?

The official page lists €24 a year billed annually, or a monthly plan, with a 14-day free trial. The final price may vary with taxes and region.

Is there a one-time-purchase Epic Pen alternative?

Yes. Sincron Screen Tools has an $89 lifetime plan, a single payment for 2 computers, with a 7-day refund guarantee. If you only want to draw on screen, you do not need to pay at all: drawing is unlimited on the free plan. ZoomIt is free too.

Do drawings show up in Teams and Meet?

In Sincron, yes, by default, when you share your entire screen; ghost mode in Settings hides your strokes. Epic Pen also advises sharing the screen rather than a single window for drawings to show.

Do I need an internet connection to draw in Sincron?

No. Capturing, annotating and drawing work offline, and nothing leaves your computer. Only translating and summarizing go online, with your own key.
